The Auction Box

The old port fish market, five in the morning. The day's first auction closed on the best bid of the season and the money stayed in the wooden box in the room, waiting for the bank to open. When the clerk came back with the signature book, the box was where it belonged and so was the key. There was nothing inside, and to leave that room you have to step onto the quay.
